Cheticamp River Restoration (2024): Long Pool & Robert's Brook Tributary

This proposal seeks to remediate habitat degradation directly linked to human development at two locations on the Cheticamp River. At Long Pond, an important pool for Atlantic salmon, active erosion is threatening a 60m section that borders the Salmon Pool's Trail. Here, the overall objective aims to protect this important pool, while stabilizing the trail and maintaining visitor access to the upper river. Armor stone will be placed on the north embankment to protect against erosion. Installation of rock deflectors slightly upstream of the area in question are also planned. Finally, two sills will be installed inside the streambed. Stabilization work involves the use of an excavator, necessary to complete scheduled work. Planting of riparian vegetation along sections of eroding trail is also planned. At Robert's Brook (tributary), the lower reaches are impacted by human development (e.g., upstream dam, campground, bridge, infrastructure, lawns). This has resulted in significant over-widening of the brook channel. Proposed remediation involves working with the dominant meander to help reinstate natural conditions. A series of hand-built instream structures (rock deflectors and rock sills) will be developed to help deepen the thalweg. A Consultant's Report is currently under development. Upon completion, the contents therein will be used write the basic impact assessment.
