Clyburn Brook Habitat Restoration

The proposed project aims to restore natural channel structure and improve in-stream habitat quality of the Clyburn Brook in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The proposed work will be completed from Swinging Bridge Pool to Doyle Pool within Clyburn Brook. The brook's current over-wide, shallow condition with limited natural features reduces salmonid habitat, increases vulnerability to warming temperatures, and impedes fish movement. Restoration will involve installing in-stream structures —such as digger logs, deflectors, and covered banks— anchored with rebar and supported by relocated riverbed rock to rebuild channel complexity and improve habitat diversity. Bank stabilization will also be completed, incorporating native soils and plants to prevent further loss of riparian habitat. The expected project completion date will be October 2026.
