I am strongly opposed to New Brunswick Power's proposal to build a natural gas power plant on the Chignecto Isthmus. This region is environmentally sensitive, is of historical and agricultural significance and is home to species at risk. The Chignecto isthmus is also a critical wildlife corridor formoose and an important stopover for migratory birds. With rising sea levels due to climate change, the Chignecto Isthmus has been projected to be under water in less than 30 years. For all of the above reasons, the Centre Village proposal should not be approved. A natural gas power plant and diesel storage here would be an environmental disaster. Greetings! Understandably, climate change is pushing society and governments towards making difficult decisions about infrastructure, renewable energy, and the environment. Year after year, our efforts are falling short of demonstrating any real impacts. One thing is for sure, though, and that is destroying more environment won't solve anything, especially when it is ecologically sensitive. There is a clear lack of innovation, or, governments are not entertaining innovative ideas if they fly in the face of big corporations. The only reason people feel hope anymore is thanks to grassroots organizations and nonprofits... Our province is an environmental sinking ship, and no one is sounding the alarm. We need to consume less energy and live differently, but we're being steered towards towing the line. Please don't destroy more land for an ecologically dangerous project.

I would like to express my opposition to this project and the manner in which this whole process has been conducted. Not only is it irresonpsible to locate this plant in an ecologicaly sensitive area, but to do so as junior partners to a US company with a poor reputation at a time when we need to be focusing on Canadian energy sovereignty is the height of poor judgement. The secretive nature of the proposal waves many red flags as well. This whole proposal is simply unacceptable to local residents and the greater region.

The public meetings hindered rather than helped garner trust in the power utiity, the provincial government regulators, and the U.S.-based company that would operate the facility. We are experiencing the effects of climate change this summer with the extreme drought conditions, and multiple areas of NB currently on fire, with higher than usual levels of fire activity. The province should be exploring truly renewable energy sources that do not rely on fossil fuels that will contribute to climate warming emissions. Furthermore, the Chignecto Isthmus is an important wildlife corridor and home to many species of wildlife. I am a resident of Sackville, NB that attended one of the earlier Zoom sessions in July as well as a Q&A in our town tonight. The irony to attend the session tonight in the same building our municipality has had to set up a cooling center due to record breaking, climate change-fueled heat. The anger to have to sit through swarmy non-responses by Proenergy when has been the region's dryest summer in 50+ years and we've all been tip toeing around not entering our local parks and woods, holding our breath any time we hear fire truck sirens. My concern is the same as the 100+ people gathered tonight, representative of thousands more in our community: wastewater management, irreversible ecological damage, migratory animal and bird populations, human health and wellbeing, is our public utility acting in the public's best interest and on and on. There has got to be a viable alternative energy generating project that NB Power can get behind. This one is not it.

The community--those of us who will be directly impacted by the deleterious health and environmental effects of this specific project--have spoken collectively and knowledgeably about the various reasons that this project is dead on arrival. The claims about the project's potential connection to "net zero" goals seem dubious. From a broader perspective, even the World Bank, so often an ally of companies like ProEnergy, acknowledged several years ago that “we’re on track for 4 degree Celsius warmer world by century’s end marked by extreme heat waves, declining global food stocks, loss of ecosystems and biodiversity, and life-threatening sea level rise. I feel that transparency is important and the project info was held from everyone one in Tantramar,nb until it showed up in a social media post. No info or meeting with the Council and no support from Fort Folly indigenous band. No concerns about the wildlife, bird migration, resident water supply, road restrictions in the Municipality of Tantramar, driving through residential areas on narrow roads. Also close proximity to the Ramsar site, the isthmus and bird sanctuary and fishing rivers & lskes. Climate change, extreme heat & running these turbine generators in the middle of a forest, while all across Canada there are out of control fires. They dragged on their answers, filled them with jargon that civilians are sure to not understand, and sure enough, when it was not understood, they talked to us like we were idiots. I am submitting an addendum to my previous comment, no. 166, in which I requested a complete environmental impact assessment of this project. At a question and answer event hosted by PROENERGY in Tantramar on August 13, we found out that the documents submitted to the IAAC and shared at community events misrepresent the level of engagement with Indigenous stakeholders. On page 4 of their submission, PROENERGY says that: "WattBridge will also continue to engage NSMTC as a minor equity partner in the Project." Their poster presentation at open houses on August 12 and 13 claims that "Facility will be owned by PROENERGY and the North Shore Mi'kmaq Tribal Council (NSMTC) under a 25-year power purchase agreement with NB Power." At the event on August 13, a representative of the NSMTC said that they have an option to become equity partners. I'm writing on behalf of myself and my family as residents of Strait Shores. We would like to express our concerns and opposition of the Centre Village Renewables Integration and Grid Security Project. We oppose the construction of this gas powered plant because of the environmental effects that it will have on the whole South-East region of New Brunswick, specifically the Chignecto Isthmus. The Chignecto Isthmus is an environmentally sensitive area that is the home of many species that are already at risk and is the only corridor of land connecting New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. It is also a vital migratory path for many bird species. We are also concerned about the projects use of ground water and how the local wetlands, wells, brooks, streams, rivers, and lakes will be impacted. As residents of the municipality of Tantramar, we express our strong opposition to the Centreville Integration and Grid Security Project. We are deeply concerned about the environmental impact this would have on the flaura and fauna of the already fragile Chignecto Isthmus. We will leave the scientific explanation to the submissions of both EOS Eco Energy and Atlantic Wildlife Institute, with which we wholeheartedly agree. We write this, as we are experiencing the climate crisis first hand with out of control fires in our province. Now is not the time for investing in more fossil fuel project, but we need to think of real sustainable solutions like wind, solar or tidal energy, so that our creation, which is suffering, can find ways to heal from the impact of human greed. To whom this reaches, My name is Luke Patterson. I am a 39 yr old Father of 2 , who has lived in this area my entire life. Indeed, I could be considered a 'life-long' resident of the Tantramar area, since I intend to be here and have no plans to move anywhere else , in my life. That's not to say I haven't spent time elsewhere. I have seen the general degradation that power production in the fossil fuel sector first hand while working in reforestation in Alberta, among other places. I have always been thankful that home here in NB does ~not~ have a burning ( smoke stack) reminder that if left to their druthers, some of us would choose to go further in the wrong direction, environmentally speaking. I am writing to express my opposition to the Centre Village Renewables Integration and Grid Security Project due to concern of global climate change. This project will secure New Brunswick and Canada in a future containing fossil fuels and delaying the shift to renewable energy further. The money going toward this project would be much better invested in renewables to benefit the people of New Brunswick longer while also benefitting the global population by reducing climate change. This project is a poor investment and only an easy solution to the needed 500MW.

At this point, given what we know about climate change and the impact of fossil fuels, an EIA is not needed to prove that this project should not go forward. I would like to see our province invest in renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, and a concerted effort to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

The climate crisis has already resulted in loss of life in all parts of the world, with a disproportionate impact on marginalized populations.
