I am writing as a resident of Midgic and co-owner of 100 acres of farmland, animals, gardens, and woods to express my deep concern and strong opposition to the proposed Centre Village Renewables Integration and Grid Security Project. I request that a comprehensive impact assessment be undertaken per the guidelines suggested by DUC and that all further action toward this project be brought to a sober halt.
The Sikniktewaq/Chignecto Isthmus is home to protected areas for wildlife, migratory birds and wildlife, fish populations, not to mention many farms with crops, livestock, and other animals, such as ours. It is horrifying that local food producers have not been consulted in this process. We, as New Brunswickers, have a responsibility not only to support local farmers, but also to consider those who live within this beloved region—our community members who hike, cycle, and hunt on these lands and along the Canada Trail which bisects our beloved century-farm property.
The planned discharge of wastewater into the marshlands without serious consideration of environmental impacts is unconscionable. I shudder at the lack of transparency and genuine consultation, including the attempt to rush a process through during the summer weeks when so many residents are travelling. The decision not to notify this region's MLA and the mayor of Tantramar is equally disappointing.
In short, a gas plant that produces harmful emissions and requires precious water resources should not be built in the middle of a region with increasing fire risk and with sensitive wetlands.
Respectfully,
Linda Pearse
