Opposition to the 'Center Village Renewables Integration and Grid Security Project' - Consider future generations

I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed project. We are in a climate emergency that has been caused by the burning of fossil fuels. The climate crisis has already resulted in loss of life in all parts of the world, with a disproportionate impact on marginalized populations. The science is clear: we must stop burning fossil fuels in order to mitigate this crisis and prevent further loss of life and ecosystems. The more fossil fuels we emit, the closer the risk of crossing irreversable tipping points in Earth's ecological systems. The global context is crucial to understand, because the actions we take here have implications for lives in other parts of the world. Canada is a privileged country; we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to transition to renewable energy. The proposed project would lock New Brunswick into decades more of fossil fuel use. This cannot happen. We do not have the carbon budget globally to be undertaking new fossil fuel projects.

The project proposal includes misleading information such as labeling this as a "renewable" project, as well as unsubstantiated claims in emissions reporting, stating that more sustainable technology will exist when it is eventually time to decomission the power plant so emissions numbers can be reduced. The Chignecto Isthmus is a critical migratory corridor, home to fragile wetland ecosystems and many endangered species. A comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment must be conducted, and consultation with local Indigenous communities remains inadequate. We must rethink any project that emits greenhouse gases, and focus instead on reducing our overall energy consumption.

Climate change demands that we think long-term into the future about the actions we take now. How is equity for future generations being considered in relation to this proposed project?
