Long Range Campsite Redevelopment

Parks Canada is proposing to develop a new rustic backcountry campsite to support current visitor use along the Long Range Traverse, an unmarked and rugged backcountry route within Gros Morne National Park. The work will include construction of a new campsite and decommissioning of two existing campsites, one near Mark's Pond and the other near Little Island Pond, both of which have experienced significant flooding. The new campsite will be located on the northeast corner of an unnamed pond, directly north of Little Island Pond, and 1.5 km north of the Little Island Pond campsite. The planned work includes the construction of five 12' x 12' tent pads, the installation of one pit privy, and a bear box, along with an additional platform with a picnic table for a designated food preparation area. Additional tasks include necessary vegetation clearing and trail access improvements to accommodate the new site. Due to the scope of work is has been determined that a basic impact assessment is required to address potential effects.
