Summer guided activities by business license holders for Gros Morne National Park

A business licensing system for summer guided/outfitter activities in Gros Morne National Park will be in place by fall 2020. All current and anticipated summer guiding activities will be assessed in an Impact Assessment, which will be appended to each business license and will identify specific mitigations for each type of guiding activity. Summer guiding activities are varied and will take place in a wide range of locations throughout the park from spring to fall. The proposed guiding activities take place or may take place in Zones I to IV of Gros Morne National Park's Zoning Plan, in particular beyond areas of developed infrastructure. For instance, backpacking and multi-day hikes on the Northern and Long Range Traverse routes, as well as off-trail day hikes like Western Brook Pond Gorge and Tablelands plateau occur in areas of Zone I (special preservation) or II (wilderness). Other proposed guiding activities such as health and wellness activities in a natural setting, outdoor culinary experiences requiring on-site food preparation, watersports like kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddleboard, and indigenous experiences like fire circles and smudging, will likely happen in Zone III (natural environment) and Zone IV (outdoor recreation) areas like coves, inlets and beaches along the park's coast, Trout River Pond and park trails, campgrounds and day use areas.
