Demolition of Six (6) buildings associated with the former Old Zone Hospital in Sioux Lookout, Ontario
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) is proposing a project to deconstruct six (6) aging and inadequate structures associated with the former old zone hospital in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. Three (3) of the structures proposed to be demolished as a part of this project are the old hospital (2,488 sq.m.), the hostel (780 sq.m.), and a mini-home (56 sq.m.), which are located at 82,76 & 85 - Seventh Avenue, respectively. The other three (3) structures to be demolished include a garage (10 sq.m) at 9 – Sixth Avenue and a house (180 sq.m.) and a garage (28 sq.m.) at 90.5 Queen Street. The majority of these buildings were constructed between 1950-70s and are in advanced state of disrepair.
Physical works and activities for this project include: removal of any designated substances (such as asbestos, lead paint) and the fuel storage tanks in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, controlled deconstruction of the buildings including any foundation footings and underground utilities, removal (excavation) of impacted soil around the physical works, and reinstatement of disturbed areas. Any designated substances removed from the buildings will be managed as hazardous wastes. All waste, including any liquid waste, generated as part of the project will be disposed off-site at an appropriately licensed facility. Once the building demolitions are completed, the site will be restored to a flat and open green space and remain as such until the redevelopment team identifies its future use. There is no new construction proposed as a part of this project.
