Municipality of Jasper – Columbarium and Cemetery Improvements

The Municipality of Jasper operates a municipal cemetery that is an important cultural landscape within Jasper National Park, and which is approaching its capacity for internments. The Municipality has proposed improvements to the cemetery with the following objectives: • Add overall capacity for emergency situations and long-term community needs • Expand burial capacity • Upgrade infrastructure and accessibility • Preserve heritage and sense of place • Consolidate and improve operations. The Project will proceed in phases. Phase 1 would go ahead in summer 2026 and include creating additional burial space within the cemetery by consolidating maintenance facilities in the parking lot, adding sea cans for storage, replacing the site roadway, and installing washroom facilities, visitor amenities, benches, and waste receptacles at the site.
Latest update
May 22 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until June 21 2026 respecting that determination.
