ATCO Electric - Pyramid Bench Underground Conversion

ATCO Electric has completed a Wildfire Risk Analysis of its utility system within Jasper National Park. This analysis identified several areas where the potential risk for wildfire is high due to possible tree-to-powerline contacts.  ATCO is proposing to build ~ 6.0 km of new underground powerline to serve Pyramid Lake Resort, Patricia Lake Bungalows, and Jasper Riding Stables. The new alignment will follow the road allowance in the pre-disturbed ditch line for roughly 4.8 km from the bottom of Pyramid Lake Road to near the turnoff to Patricia Lake Bungalows, then follow the existing cross-country overhead alignment for roughly 1.2 km to Pyramid Lake Lodge. Project activities include plowing and trenching single- and triple-phase underground cable in conduit for connection to existing transformers; salvaging the remaining overhead sections of the old powerline; and rehabilitation of the old alignment and new project footprint, including restoring contours and seeding with native species. The installation of this line will allow for resiliency in the power supply system through the removal of the existing overhead powerline serving the Pyramid Bench to reduce incidents of power outages due to tree fall, or loss of electrical infrastructure in the event of a wildfire.
