Installation of a 15,000L diesel fuel tank at the Rivière-au-Renard Search and Rescue station.

As part of the Government of Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy (small craft construction) and the Canadian Coast Guard's fleet renewal planning, the Coast Guard is scheduled to receive several new long-range search and rescue vessels. These new "Bay Class" vessels will be deployed across Canada. The Rivière-au-Renard Search and Rescue program is scheduled to receive one of the new "Bay Class" vessels at their facilities located at 15 rue de la Langevin in Rivière-au-Renard, beginning in May 2023. In order to supply this new vessel at dockside, a new 15,000L diesel fuel tank is required. The new tank will be installed on the site of the Rivière-au-Renard Search and Rescue station.

Update

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has determined that the proposed 15,000L diesel fuel tank installation is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on the following factors:

  • impacts on the rights of Indigenous peoples;
  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • community knowledge;
  • comments received from the public; and
  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is convinced that the project is unlikely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

As a result, Fisheries and Oceans Canada may proceed with the project.
