L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site Viking Silhouette Trail Work

The proposed project at L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site involves formalizing an existing informal path used by visitors to access the Viking Silhouette sculpture. Following 2023 parking lot upgrades, visitors shifted to a more accessible alternate path, which will now be improved by placing crushed stone and adding signage while maintaining the existing 40-45 centimeter width. All work will be done by hand using buckets and gardening tools and will take place over approximately two days. The work area is a previously disturbed site with no known rare plants, species at risk, or archaeological resources, and impacts on the cultural landscape are expected to be negligible. Mitigation measures include limiting activities to the existing disturbed footprint, no use of heavy equipment, and immediate reporting if unknown cultural resources are encountered. The project is expected to enhance visitor safety and experience while protecting the site's natural and cultural resources.
