Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site Liner Installation and Contaminated Site Clean-up

A loader and excavator have been staged at the Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site to service site requirements such as dock dredging, lifting material onto the fort walls, excavation work and other project work as required. The equipment is older equipment that is serviced each year to bring it to operational status and to drain fluids at the end of each operating season. Over time this equipment has leaked fluids and lubricants. In 2020 Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments were conducted to determine the nature of the contamination in the sand, gravel and cobble soil. It was determined that approximately 82.5 m3 of contaminated soil may need to be removed for remediation or storage at a licensed facility, with Thompson, Manitoba being the closest such facility. In conjunction with the remediation work, an adjacent location has been identified to install a containment liner where the equipment will be staged in the future. Additional steps will be taken to minimize the potential of future spills.
This project will be assessed with a basic impact assessment.
