Solar Pumping Station Installation at Spring 263 in the East Block of Grasslands National Park

Due to climactic constraints (annual precipitation of <360 mm) and limited distances moved by livestock from water sources (rarely travelling and grazing beyond >1.6km from a water source), water is a limiting factor for livestock grazing and distribution. As a result of such limitations, in addition to uneven water distribution and current unavailability of other management strategies (e.g. fire, lick tubs), uneven livestock distribution and areas that lack grazing disturbance can occur. The objective is to install a solar water pumping station at a developed spring (49.188, -106.723) located >1.6km from current watering sources in a 4-section pasture within the East Block of Grasslands National Park (GNP). Materials for the off-site watering system include: installation of a solar panel pump to actively pump water from the spring to the troughs, water supply lines to transport water from spring to troughs, and troughs for cattle to water from. Specifications of supply lines and troughs will depend on anticipated herd size, flow rate of the spring, and placement of waterer infrastructure.
