Subject:  Global First Power Project's Description for the "Micro Modular Reactor" to be constructed and operated at Chalk River

In this document we are offering our comments regarding Global First Power Project's Description for the "Micro Modular Reactor" to be constructed and operated at Chalk River.

There are troubling omissions in the Project Description.   These omissions cover important financial matters and scientific concerns.

In the project description the proponent does not indicate a plan for the disposal of the nuclear waste that will be generated by the project.  This missing factor is a critical concern because no secure, effective method of disposal of nuclear waste exists to date.

The proponent's submission lacks information about financing; specifically the amount required from federal funds.   The enormous cost of nuclear power plant construction is only overshadowed by the long-term cost of waste management.  In the case of nuclear power, the waste management lasts for hundreds of thousands of years.   Canada would be further ahead to invest in existing, proven renewable energy technologies.

The proponent's submission does not indicate the source of the fuel for the "Micro Modular Reactor".  Dealing with enriched uranium fuel implies concomitant risks that should be investigated thoroughly before the use of this technology receives approval for development.  Canada would be taxed with heightened terrorism and nuclear proliferation obligations.

This proposed project threatens the financial and environmental safety of current and future citizens of the Ottawa Valley and of all Canada.
