Renard Diamond Mine Project – Public Comments Invited and Public Meeting Held

OTTAWA – May 22, 2012 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is conducting a comprehensive study environmental assessment of the Renard Diamond Mine Project located in Quebec. The public is invited to comment on the Environmental Impact Statement that describes the project and provides an overview of the potential environmental effects of all phases of the project.

The Environmental Impact Statement and more information on this project are available on the Agency's website at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca (registry reference number 11-03-55169).

Public comments received by June 22, 2012 will be considered.

This is the second comment period related to the environmental assessment of this project. A public comment period on the Comprehensive Study Report will be announced at a later date.

The public is also invited to attend a public meeting where they can hear about the project and its potential impacts and provide their views to the federal government. Public meeting details:

The Proposed Project

The project involves the development of a diamond mine by Stornoway Diamond Corporation on its Foxtrot property in the James Bay region of Northern Quebec. It involves the development of the mine and local infrastructure, such as open pits, shafts, mine adits, groundwater pumping, mill, kimberlite tailings impoundments, housing complex, airstrip and associated facilities.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
