Highway 914 - All Weather Roadway - McArthur River Mine Site to Cigar Lake Mine Site – Public Comments Invited and Federal Funding Available

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is proposing to construct an all-weather road between the existing access roads to the McArthur River and the Cigar Lake mine sites to provide a more efficient route for trucks to access mines in northern Saskatchewan.

The project is subject to both a comprehensive study under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and an environmental impact assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act (Saskatchewan).

The public is invited to provide comments on a draft Project-Specific Guidelines and Scoping Document which incorporates the requirements of the federal and provincial environmental assessment processes and identifies the key issues and studies to be addressed in an environmental impact statement.

Please provide your comments by November 29, 2010 in order to ensure that they are considered prior to the finalization of the Project Specific Guidelines and Scoping Document. All comments will be reviewed by both federal and provincial regulators and will be considered public as part of the project file.

The document can be viewed at the offices of the northern communities of La Ronge, Air Ronge, Pinehouse Lake, Green Lake, Big River, Meadow Lake, Beauval, Missinipe, Stanley Mission, Southend, Brabant Lake, and Wollaston Lake; Black Lake and Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nations; Lac La Ronge Indian Band; Métis Nation-Northern Region I in La Ronge, Métis Nation-Northern Region II in Buffalo Narrows; Métis Nation-Northern Region III in Île à La Crosse; and the Saskatchewan Environmental Society.

This is the first of several opportunities for public comments that will occur during the environmental assessment of the project. Future opportunities for public participation will be announced at a later date.

$20,000 in Funding Available for Public Participation

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is making available $20,000 under its Participant Funding Program to assist groups and individuals to take part in the federal environmental assessment of this project. This funding is intended for activities that will follow the public consultation currently underway. Applications received by the Agency by November 29, 2010 will be considered.
