Millennium Mine Project

September 16, 2009 (Updated July 19, 2010) -- The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is required to ensure that a comprehensive study is conducted pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act commencing on August 21, 2009 in relation to the project: Millennium Mine Project.

Cameco Corporation is proposing to develop an underground uranium mine located in the southeastern part of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 600 km north of Saskatoon. The proposed Millennium mine would produce 150,000 to 200,000 tonnes of ore annually for six to seven years. Ore and associated waste materials would be transported to a licensed mill along a new 21 km access road that would connect to the existing road network.

On July 12, 2010, a series of amendments to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act came into force. The amendments require that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission provide the public with the opportunity to comment on the Millennium Mine Project and the conduct of the comprehensive study.

An environmental assessment is required in relation to the project because the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission may take action in relation to subsection 24(2) of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act.

This project is also subject to the environmental assessment requirements of the Government of Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission will act as the Federal Environmental Assessment Coordinator for this environmental assessment.

As per the Cabinet Directive on Improving the Performance of the Regulatory System for Major Resource Projects, this environmental assessment has been identified as a major natural resource project. For additional information refer to the Major Projects Management Office's Tracker that monitors the progress of proposed major resource projects through the federal regulatory review system.
