Highway 914 - All Weather Roadway - McArthur River Mine Site to Cigar Lake Mine Site Project – Federal Funding Awarded to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA - February 2, 2011 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has awarded $20,000 to three applicants to support their participation in the federal environmental assessment of the proposed Highway 914 - All Weather Roadway - McArthur River Mine Site to Cigar Lake Mine Site Project in Saskatchewan.

The funding recipients are the Kineepik Métis Local, the English River First Nation and the Saskatchewan Environmental Society.

This funding is awarded through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency and is being provided to assist the recipients’ participation in upcoming steps in the comprehensive study process, including the review of the comprehensive study report.

A funding review committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to examine the requests for funding for this project. The committee’s report, along with further information on the project, is available on the Agency’s Web site, in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 10-03-57731.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is proposing to construct an all-weather road between the existing access roads to the McArthur River and the Cigar Lake mine sites to provide a more efficient route for trucks to access mines in northern Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
