Millennium Mine Project – Availability of $20,000 to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is making available $20,000 under its Participant Funding Program to assist groups and individuals to participate in the environmental assessment of the proposed Millennium Mine project in northern Saskatchewan.

Cameco Corporation is proposing to develop an underground uranium mine located in the southeast part of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 600 km north of Saskatoon. The proposed Millennium Mine would produce 150,000 to 200,000 tonnes of ore annually for six to seven years. Ore and associated waste materials, other than clean waste rock, would be transported to a licensed mill along a new 21 km access road that would connect to the existing road network. Clean waste rock would be stored on-site.

To receive funding, successful applicants must participate in the environmental assessment of the project. This funding is intended for activities that will follow the public consultation currently underway on the scope of the project.

A funding review committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, will consider all applications and make recommendations on the allocation of funds. Applications received by the Agency by June 15, 2010 will be considered.

Information on the program, including the Participant Funding Program Guide, the application form and the contribution agreement, is available at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca. Information on the proposed project is also available on the Web site in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 09-03-49928.
