Notice of Determination

Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area, Milford, Ontario – January 25, 2024 – The authority has determined that the proposed demolition of structures and removal of debris in the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;

  • Indigenous knowledge;

  • community knowledge;

  • comments received from the public; and

  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination are:

  • Travel routes and work sites will be limited to developed areas to limit impact on vegetation and wildlife habitat; sensitive habitat will be marked and avoided.

  • Sediment and erosion control measures will be used to prevent/limit the introduction of material into the waterways and air.

  • All machinery and equipment will be clean and in good working order to limit the introduction of invasive species, emissions and chemicals into the environment.

  • The timing of the project activity is during the inactive season for most wildlife including species at risk and outside the breeding and migratory season for birds therefore avoids effects to individuals.

  • Daily wildlife sweeps will be conducted, and all wildlife encountered will be encouraged to leave the work site, work will only continue once the wildlife has left.

The authority is satisfied that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, the authority may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
