Repairs to Y Jetty at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt

October 19, 2023 — The Department of National Defence must decide whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this decision, the Department of National Defence is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. All comments received will be considered public. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence (DND) has proposed a project. The proposed project will include repairs to the Y Jetty structure as follows:

Above Water Repairs

• Replace timber fender chocks (3 sections total)

• Replace glulam timber wales (1 section total)

Inter-Tidal Zone Repairs

• Replace all hanging anode strings (approx. 16 in total)

• Replace timber fender piles (approx. 70 in total)

• Replace floating timber fender camels (approx. 9 in total)

• Remove, replace or repair rub strips

• Install new safety ladders on floats

Subtidal Repairs

• Replace timber fender piles (approx. 70 in total)

• Replace all hanging anode strings (approx. 16 in total)

Below the Mud Line

• Removal and replacement of existing timber piles with new wood fender piles. Minimal disturbance to the seabed expected. At this time there is no sediment to be excavated to the surface.
