July 7, 2023, Cape Scott, B.C. – Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) have decided that the proposed project, Connected Coast Network on Federal Lands – Cape Scott Lightstation and Scott Island marine National Wildlife Area, is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. 

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
•    any impacts that the project may have on the rights of Indigenous peoples;
•    community knowledge;
•    comments received from the public; and
•    technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination are outlined in a subsequent registry posting titled Mitigation Measures Table. The third-party document is available in English only.

DFO/CCG is the proponent of the proposed project, providing financial assistance to allow the project to proceed at the Cape Scott Lightstation. ECCC is a federal authority as a Scott Islands Protected Marine Area Regulations permit is required to allow the project to proceed within the Scott Islands marine National Wildlife Area.

DFO and ECCC are satisfied that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, on areas of federal jurisdiction. DFO and ECCC may perform any duty or function to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part. Environmental effects that are within provincial jurisdiction would be addressed through provincial regulations.
