Elmtree Property Gold Mine Project – Federal Funding Allocated to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA – June 2, 2011 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has allocated a total of $50,000 to three applicants to support their participation in the federal environmental assessment of the proposed Elmtree Property Gold Mine Project in New Brunswick.

The funding recipients are the Comité d’intervention de la mine d’or Elmtree, Bassins Versants de la Baie des Chaleurs and Bathurst Sustainable Development.

This funding is allocated through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency and is being provided to assist the recipients’ participation in upcoming steps in the comprehensive study process, including the review of the Comprehensive Study Report.

A funding review committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to examine the requests for funding for this project. The committee’s report, along with further information on the project, is available on the Agency’s website, in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 11-03-61036.

Castle Resources Inc., the proponent, proposes to construct, operate and reclaim an open-pit gold mine located approximately 20 kilometres northwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The mine will have a lifespan of 18 to 24 months and extract up to 559,000 tonnes per year of gold containing ore for off-site processing.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
