Deep Panuke Offshore Gas Development Project (Archived)

Description: EnCana Corporation has submitted a proposal to develop the Deep Panuke natural gas field, located offshore on the Scotian Shelf, approximately 175 kilometres southeast of Goldboro. The project would involve processing of natural gas offshore and the transportation of the natural gas through a sub-sea pipeline to Goldboro. Once onshore, the natural gas would be transported through a new 3 to 4 km long pipeline that would then tie into the existing Maritimes & Northeast pipeline. The Deep Panuke natural gas field has recoverable reserves approaching one trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
Decision of the Minister of the Environment: On December 20, 2002, following a review of public comments and the environmental assessment report, the Minister concluded that the project is unlikely to cause significant adverse environmental effects and referred the project back to the responsible authority for appropriate next steps.
Federal Responsible Authorities: Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (lead), National Energy Board, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment Canada, and Industry Canada.
