  • Dear Honourable Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, Montem resources should not get a penny from the federal Clean Fuels Fund as their actions are completely inconsistent with the goals of the fund. To be considered at all for federal assistance Montem must commit to get out of the coal mining business. It must surrender all of its coal mining leases in southern Alberta and withdraw the Tent Mine Redevelopment Project from the just started federal impact assessment process. They have not. I have great optimism for the future of energy in Alberta and Canada as your government moves to advance cleaner energy sources. I respect the work you are doing in this regard. I reside in the Crowsnest Pass and have been involved with the attempt of foreign companies demands to destroy our meagre watershed by extracting and mining mettalurgical coal. Montem has sat quietly in the sidelines while Riversdale Resources engaged with the Provincial and Federal government. The Alberta Energy Regulator(AER)  came out clearly against Riversdale after a six year long engagement. Montem has already been told in no uncertain terms exactly the conditions and information required to present to the AER over a year ago.   • This province needs investment and infrastructure that is done environmentally responsible. Oversight is important of course and can be done. The economic benefits of this project and the infrastructure it will create in the Crowsnest Pass, Pikani and surrounding areas is needed. Our lands are at risk because the lack of infrastructure and resources to maintain and protect it are so prevalent. Industry will work with our Municipality and Provincial governments to provide investment, jobs and the needed tools much like our neighbors to west in Sparwood and Elk Valley. Engage with them, learn what and how they are doing it. Tourism is important but without industry to support it , it will never come to fruition. We can protect our environment, enhance our public land use, see economic benefits for the community and province together.

  • I strongly oppose the Tent Mountain Mine Redevelopment Project. The damage that has already been done, continues to be done, and is being proposed through "redevelopment" has had, and will have devastating environmental, cultural and social effects on an already traumatized landscape and peoples. Coal mining needs to stop. It flies in the the face of, and is counter productive to truth and reconciliation work and climate crisis actions. Any continued (they are in there now, punching in roads and destroying habitat and sacred land), and any further proposed development is making it impossible for us to realize even the most baseline health outcomes. I'm stating the obvious here. No water = No future. This place, this landscape is our context. To use an antiquated term, I implore you, the federal government of Canada to intervene, not only in support of Alberta and Albertans, but for all Canadians. We are all in this story ...

  • Thank you for the opportunity to send my comment I am a  Resident, small business owner in the Crowsnest Pass. I am in full support of this project. Canada/Alberta boasts the highest environmental standards in the world. There is no reason we can not have responsible resource extraction. The technology is getting better every day. I’ve read through many of the submissions and it sounds like most don’t understand the difference between thermal and metallurgical coal. Metallurgical coal is a huge demand because it is essential for our existence, it is used to make pretty much everything in our lives and if we can mine it better environmentally then elsewhere, we should! If the ultimate goal is less pollution and a more healthy earth. The need for this product isn’t going to go away any time in the near future.   • I stand with thousands of Albertans who do not want any further coal development on the eastern slopes of the Rockies. I am a current resident. landowner, and former rancher in this area, and have lived most of my life here. I have worries about the security of our water supply in southern Alberta, including pollution issues from mining, and worries also about the deteriorating integrity of the ecosystem, which can only be worsened if this project goes ahead. In general, I have grave concerns over climate change issues. I do not see any merit (including consideration of ecomonic benefits) in allowing an Australian company to mine in our Rockies to ship coal to China.
