The Initial Project Description generates many questions and significant concerns.Fort Saskatxhewanis a rapidly growing city of 30,000 located only 7 kilometers downwind of the proposed project. The project will have 200 large, industrial sized, internal combustion engines running 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. What specific air quality safeguards are anticipated? What specific recourse will the community have if safe air quality standards are not maintained every minute of the estimated 25 year working life of this project?
The Provincial government has stated that data centers must supply their own electric power. This is logical and necessary as Alberta has recently experienced brownouts during some very severe weather events. The project description uses phrasing like 'reduce the impact' on the electric grid. It should state that the project will be 100% electricity self sufficient. The description is vague and misleading. Will the project be 100% electricity self sufficient for the 25 year life span?
200 very large internal combustion engines running nonstop 365 days per year will create a lot of greenhouse gases. Carbon capture is an existing / functioning technology in the Heartland Industrial Park. Will this project be using carbon capture to reduce greenhouse gas output to zero?
The project has received approval to consume 550,000 cubic meters of potable water per year. What technology / design criteria are being used to reduce the use of potable water? What assurances are there that this water use age will not increase over time?
What other geographic locations exist to move these engines further away from the City of Fort Saskatchewan?
Was the City of Fort Saskatchewan consulted on this project? If yes, please share the consultation results. If not, then why?
