Data centers occupy large areas of land, consume large amounts of water and electricity/gas that would otherwise be used for the benefit of the local community. Data centers do not offer any long term local benefits except to companies that will profit off of them. In the beginning there will be a few hundred jobs created but once the data center is established it does not need many people to operate these centers. It is a quick construction boom with a lay off shortly after and no long term job creation and the land it is occupying cannot be used for other projects that would benefit the community, example- housing, recreation, a site with long term job creation.
This data center has a permit to consume 1500 cubic meters of water a day, that is still a crazy amount of water. With the droughts we have been having, forest fires, and increase in population in the area, it would be very detrimental to the local region to have a data center using up the resources we have. As for electricity/gas, we are already paying an extreme amount for our utilities. To have a data center adding to this, our utilities will skyrocket. We are seeing this in other communities that have data centers. Water, infrastructure, and electricity/gas strain.
Animals will be impacted. They will be displaced from their habitat, interrupt feeding areas, and polluted food/water sources. The noise/light generated will confuse the animals causing issues. People living nearby will also be impacted by this.
Data centers cause a major impact on wildlife, electricity/gas, water, and infrastructure. All this without benefiting the community in the long term for profit of companies and possible benefit to people that will not have their own community and lives be impacted. Community consultations and town halls should be held in all surrounding communities before going ahead with this center.- Submitted by
