  • This proposed natural gas powered data centre project is risky and short-sighted. It locks the region into decades of fossil fuel use, or condemns the Woodland Cree First Nation to hold a stranded asset. It threatens the water in the region, after years of drought. Methane emissions from natural gas production and distribution historically have been underestimated; this will increase them for the region (which poses health risks) and will increase global warming. Not only that but the region has great potential for geothermal energy, which paired with wind and solar could power a much more sustainable data centre (although power source is not the only concern by a long shot). The Duncan First Nation submission makes many good points about the risks and reasonable suggestions to mitigate those risks. My only disagreement with the Duncan First Nation submission is the suggestion that alternative energy sources need not be implemented from the outset. At a very minimum a firm plan for ...

Is this cost going to be put on to the residents in the area (peace River, Grimshaw etc) that will see natural gas and hydro costs soar to pay for this data centre? Affordability is already out of control, therefore I would be restistent to this  increase in our monthly energy costs. Bennett and Peace Canyon dams, which have flattened the spring "pulse" we need. With Site C now coming online, the river’s temperature and flow are under even more stress.   • The Mihta Askiy Data Center Project should not proceed because it would lock the Peace River region into decades of new fossil-fuel power use, heavy resource consumption, and limited local benefits.  The proposal depends on a massive, dedicated natural gas power plant of up to 650 megawatts, meaning most of the new generation would simply feed servers rather than homes, businesses, or community-serving industries.  This runs directly against Canada’s stated climate goals, committing the area to large greenhouse gas emissions well past the period when emissions are supposed to be falling sharply.   • It has become obvious, over the last three years, that so-called "generative AI" is both an extreme resource hog, both power and water-wise, and poses issues such as the mass theft of information and art, significant reduction in jobs, and is contributing directly to the joblessness of many young Canadians and the destruction of the fabric of reality as we know it. Providing for a new power plant fueled by non-renewable sources solely to fuel such a destructive form of technology is patently unacceptable. Job creation and financial benefits that'll likely flow down to relevant government stakeholders are minimal, most profits stemming from data centres going directly to fuel an unsustainable stock market bubble waiting to crash, whilst the destruction caused, whether environmental or social, will be massive. This project should be rejected, and all future "power for AI data centre" projects as well, for similar reasons.

There cannot be any long term economic benefit because this industry is a fragile bubble and everybody (i.e. the general public) knows that by now.   • We can see the devastation these data centres cause in the US. Fresh water is depleted and turned toxic. Alberta is in severe drought conditions already, with water shortages common in the summer and reservoirs lower than average. Albertans water cannot be used for these AI data centres when people need these resources.   The energy used by these centres, natural gas and coal, will cause further environmental damage, creating a feedback loop further reducing precipitation and water available. In addition to this, Albertans are already struggling with cost of living increases, and these data centres have been shown to increase citizens utility costs as they foot the bill.    I don't see any benefit to allowing these companies to take our water, our air, and our money to power their AI data centres.   • The project is not needed. Energy resources are coming from the white whale project Site C, the foreign Australian billionaires who want to restart the coal extraction in Banff. The saddle hills plant by Valhalla already producing such energy along with the plant north of Slave Lake. Loon river has spoke energy transitioned already for AI.  Why another waste of money on another white whale project Site that wishes to extract water and release toxic substances, radiation and break treaty?   The Metis are included? Why? They do not own anything in Treaty 8. They are not signatories to Treaty 8 and the NRTA of 1930 and the 1933 Alberta Metis settlement acts were and/are rejected today by the indigenous treaty owners and the sovereign.   • My biggest concern with this projects is massive issues we are already seeing in the USA. Datacenters are built in low-income areas, and frequently desert areas that are already strained for lack of water. The local communities are then overloaded with massive spikes in their power bills, constant noise that causes medical harm and stress in livestock, and their water sources are drained and polluted. If this is going to happen in Canada, this CANNOT happen. There needs to be strict regulation on noise, pollution and energy demands. The local community needs the biggest say, and they also deserve to get some of the profits if the datacenter is mining their local resources. But the biggest thing is that this datacenter should not be a drain on the community. It has to be strongly regulated so that it causes the least environmental harm possible.

  • There is no amount of "benefit" to the economy that will outweigh the damage that is done to out environment by data centres. We cannot afford to continue using our economy as a reason to destroy out planet. Please so not follow through with this, or any other data centre project.
