To whom it may concern,
I am writing as a near-site resident in response to the proposed Wesleyville nuclear project led by Ontario Power Generation.
While I recognize the importance of long-term energy planning and infrastructure in Ontario, I am deeply concerned that those of us living in closest proximity to the proposed site are not being meaningfully engaged in a way that reflects the level of impact we will experience.
It is encouraging to see that the Ontario Power Generation is pursuing a partnership agreement with the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg Nations of the Williams Treaties First Nations. This demonstrates an understanding that those most affected by development deserve a voice, respect, and formalized engagement. However, I was disappointed to see that the most recent report minimally reflected the concerns of near-site residents, while clearly identifying and emphasizing the importance of other concerned parties. The recognition of Indigenous communities is both appropriate and necessary, but it should not come at the exclusion of those who also live in immediate proximity to the proposed development.
In speaking directly with other near-site neighbours, I can confirm that these concerns are not mine alone. There is a shared and growing sense among residents that our voices are not being adequately represented or incorporated into the planning process, despite the fact that we will be living with the direct, long-term impacts of this project.
My concerns are both practical and deeply personal.
We chose to live in this area for its defining qualities: the mature trees, expansive green space, quiet natural environment, and the ability to experience dark, star-filled night skies. These are not incidental features, they are the very reasons we built our lives here. Any development that alters these conditions fundamentally changes not only the landscape, but the character and livability of our community.
Specifically:
- I am concerned about the potential negative impact on property values if near-site residents are not properly considered and protected through thoughtful planning.
- I do not support the construction of facilities that would be visible from my home. The visual integrity of this landscape matters.
- I do not want to hear the operational noise of a power plant from my property. The quiet of this environment is essential to our quality of life.
- I do not want artificial lighting from the facility to disrupt the natural darkness of the night sky.
There appears to be sufficient land within the broader project area to design and situate infrastructure in a way that mitigates these impacts. I strongly urge Ontario Power Generation and regulatory bodies to prioritize siting decisions that preserve the experience of residents living west of the Wesleyville site.
At a minimum, this requires:
- Meaningful, ongoing engagement with near-site residents
- Transparent planning processes that incorporate community input
- Consideration of buffer zones, visual shielding, and noise/light mitigation
- Exploration of formal agreements that recognize and address the impacts on neighbouring communities
This is not opposition for its own sake. It is a request for thoughtful, responsible development that respects the people who already call this place home.
I urge you to ensure that near-site residents are treated not as an afterthought, but as key stakeholders in this process.
Sincerely,
Emma
