New Nuclear at Wesleyville Project
Consideration of those families living nearby

I am writing as a local resident of Port Hope, living approximately 2 km from the proposed Nuclear Project. My family, including young children, and I are deeply concerned about how this project may affect our health, safety, property, and overall well-being.
Although I understand that public comments are currently invited on the summary of the Initial Project Description, we are alarmed that there is no mention of compensation, mitigation, or protections for households like ours located so close to this facility.
Below are the key concerns I respectfully request be seriously considered and addressed:
-
Lack of Local Resident Impact Analysis
There is no clear assessment of how construction, operations, and waste from a large nuclear facility could directly affect families living nearby. We are concerned about noise, environmental emissions, traffic, and long-term health effects, especially given the proximity (2 km) to residential areas. -
No Mention of Compensation or Support
The project documentation does not reference any community compensation, property value protection, relocation support, or other measures for nearby residents. For those of us facing potential economic and lifestyle impacts, this omission is distressing. You have mentioned the financial benefits to the Province and town of Port Hope, but no mention of any benefits to those of us close by the site. -
Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
As a family with young children, we need clear assurances about emergency planning, evacuation procedures, and communication plans for households closest to the site. -
Cumulative Environmental and Social Effects
I urge the assessment to include thorough consideration of cumulative impacts including air, water, and soil, on our community, and not just the high-level project overview. -
Meaningful Community Engagement
We request more accessible, ongoing engagement opportunities targeted specifically to nearby residents, to ensure our voices are heard throughout the assessment process.
What I am asking for:
-
Transparent responses to these concerns in the impact assessment.
-
Formal inclusion of measures to protect or compensate residents directly affected by proximity to the project.
-
Continued opportunities for engagement beyond the current comment period.
Thank you for taking the time to consider the serious implications this project may have on the families in our community. I look forward to your response and to seeing how our concerns are addressed in the assessment process.
