Option study required

I write as a longtime supporter of the role played by nuclear in our electricity generation mix. However, technologies have advanced since the days when Ontario's nuclear plants were inaugurated and other less costly, low carbon alternative generation alternatives now exist.

My main point is that no options study appears to have been carried out by the Ontario government. For years I made investment recommendations in a government environment based on thorough evaluations and costings of alternatives. There is no evidence that such an evaluation has taken place in this case.

A nuclear plant may well turn out to be the best option after thorough evaluation. However given Ontario's failure in recent years to keep up with comparable jurisdictions in using wind, solar, hydro, geo-thermal and similar technologies in its energy mix, this seems rather doubtful. In any case, the public will remain unconvinced.
