Ottawa ON K1A 0H3RE: Letter of Support for Atura Power’s proposed Riverside Generating Station Project
To Whom it May Concern,
The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) is pleased to offer our strong support for Atura Power’s proposed Riverside Generating Station Project in St. Clair Township (Lambton County).
The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership is the lead economic development agency for the Sarnia-Lambton, Ontario area. Our mandate includes fostering economic stability, growth and diversification across the Sarnia-Lambton area, to enhance the quality of life and create a vibrant place to live and work.
Once completed, Atura’s proposed project stands to be a significant economic driver for the Sarnia-Lambton area and all of Ontario, via the region’s transmission and distribution capabilities, through the addition of 500 megawatts. The additional energy capacity could be leveraged to accommodate the energy needs of future economic growth in Sarnia-Lambton including the potential for investment in low-carbon hydrogen, large scale manufacturing, data centres, and value-added agriculture projects.
The Riverside Generating Station Project would be a complementary addition to Sarnia-Lambton’s existing energy production cluster with its highlighted natural gas, wind, and solar generation totalling over 2,800 megawatts of energy production capabilities. Natural gas-based power generation currently takes place in Lambton County at five production locations contributing to both the public grid and private energy use.
We believe that the utilization of the former Ontario Power Generating Station Lambton Generating Station site represents an acceptable use of a brownfield development site that was previously used for similar activities – power production at a coal generation facility. Moreover, the site already has significant accompanying infrastructure to accommodate energy production, in the form of an existing HydroOne switchyard, utility infrastructure, natural gas pipelines, and connections to regional transmission lines. Additionally, with a lifespan of greater than twenty years, the project could accommodate the energy needs of the province while projects for other energy production pathways are assessed and commissioned – including the potential for small modular nuclear investment on the same property.
Lastly, we expect the project to contribute positively to St. Clair Township through the associated jobs creation – for construction and operation – and increase in property tax assessment that had been lost upon the shutdown of the former Lambton Generating Station.
In summary, the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership believes the Atura Power Riverside Generating Station Project to be a benefit to St. Clair Township, Lambton County, and Ontario, assisting in meeting the energy needs regionally and across the province through a clean, efficient, and safe production pathway.
