As an environmental impact specialist, my primary concern with the Greenlight Electricity Centre is its reliance on natural gas as the sole fuel source. At a design capacity of 1,800 MW, the facility will be one of the largest gas-fired power plants in Canada, and even with combined cycle efficiency gains, it will emit several million tonnes of CO² annually if carbon capture and storage (CCS) is not deployed immediately at scale. The project description emphasizes that the plant is “carbon capture ready,” but this optionality is not equivalent to an enforceable commitment. Unless capture systems are installed from the outset, the facility risks becoming a long-lived, high-emitting asset at a time when Canada has committed to net-zero by 2050 and Alberta’s power sector faces increasing scrutiny.
