Opposition to Centre Village project

I am strongly opposed to New Brunswick Power's proposal to build a natural gas power plant on the Chignecto Isthmus.  This region is environmentally sensitive, is of historical and agricultural significance and is home to species at risk.  The Chignecto isthmus is also a critical wildlife corridor formoose and an important stopover for migratory birds.  With rising sea levels due to climate change, the Chignecto Isthmus has been projected to be under water in less than 30 years.

For all of the above reasons, the Centre Village proposal should not be approved.  A natural gas power plant and diesel storage here would be an environmental disaster.

I understand that New Brunswick Power needs to increase their energy capacity and that the federal government would like to have oil and gas pipelines stretching across Canada, however Canada should be ended our reliance on fossil fuels and focussing on green power and small nuclear reactors.

If the New Brunswick and federal governments are going to insist on building a new gas power plant in New Brunswick, then it absolutely should not be situated at the proposed location.  The Chignecto Isthmus is a critical corridor between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.   There are transmission lines elsewhere in the province that a new power plant could be built near without endangering the wetland, farmland, and critical wildlife habitat of the isthmus.

Separate from my comments above, I feel that area residents' concerns are valid over the short notice from New Brunswick Power about the proposed facility,  the contract with a US company that has lawsuits over deficient work (such as Beumer Corp. v. ProEnergy Services, LLC, No. 17-2862 (8th Cir. 2018)) and during the current tensions with the US government administration.
