Opposed to nuclear waste in northwestern Ontario

I write as a long time resident of northwestern Ontario, an ecologist, and a community member. I am strongly opposed to nuclear waste being transported through and stored in northern Ontario. People in our area do not use the electricity produced by nuclear power, but are being pressured to accept the forever-dangerous waste products and all of the risk. There is no safe way to transport these materials through the north. Our area is prone to extreme weather conditions and catastrophic forest fires. Northern Ontario is not the right solution for southern Ontario's radioactive waste. I have serious concerns about the lack of real consultation with Indigenous communities, from a human rights standpoint. I have serious concerns from an environmental standpoint. I realize that money is no object when it comes to buying consent - nobody wants this waste in their backyard, for obvious and legitimate reasons. It is time to prioritize safer energy generation practices. It is unethical to coerce the north into accepting all the risk - the forever risk - of accepting nuclear waste. It is not safe, it not ethical, and we don't want it.
