Other Options for Waste

Having lived near the Bruce nuclear plant for half my life, I am well aware of the high-paying jobs that result from this sourse of energy. Unfortunately, it cannot claim to be a green energy or environmentally safe, when it results in the most toxic and hazardous waste ever produced. The government should phase this method out as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the deadly waste IS a serious problem. It is very shortsighted to believe that burying it in the ground is the best or only solution. No area in Canada is immune from earthquakes, which would have catastrophic effects on a DGR. Siting such a mine near water is insane. It is destined to leak as have all the others.
Other solutions have existd since the beginning of nuclear. If we had gone with fusion instead of fission, the amount of waste would have been a small fraction of what we have. Converting now would at least prevent the production of copious amounts of more wastes. Most of the current spent fuel could power fusion plants. Conversion is expensive but so is the proposed DGR. China leads in the fusion field.
With all the creativity of our scientists it is inevitable that an efficient method of decontamination will be discovered. The currant storage of spent fuel bundles is monitored 24/7 so any problems can be addressed quickly.
So, to mitigate the problem of waste disposal:
Stop expanding nuclear and producing more.
Convert fission plants to fusion which can consume the current radioactive waste.
Move rapidly to benign, more cost-effective methods like solar, wind and wave power.
I object to this proposal on indigenous land.
Many issues are not spelled out.
Transporting nuclear waste is extremely dangerous. Communities en route need extra protection. Plans for accidents must be in place.
