I am a lifelong resident of Ignace, Ontario, and I am providing this submission regarding the proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s used nuclear fuel.
I am not concerned about the safety of the project. I have taken the opportunity to learn more about nuclear safety, including travelling to McMaster University to visit the nuclear reactor. The learning I have done and this experience increased my confidence in the technology and the safety measures associated with this project.
While I recognize that transportation of used nuclear fuel requires careful consideration, my concerns in this area are limited and can be addressed through thorough planning, strong oversight, and clear safety protocols.
My primary concern relates to economic development and long-term job creation for the community of Ignace. Economic opportunities and sustainable employment were central commitments made by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) to our community. These commitments were a key reason most, if not all, residents supported the project.
I am requesting that the agreement associated with this project be reviewed and strengthened to ensure that economic development, workforce development, and long-term employment opportunities for Ignace are clearly defined, protected, and enforceable. This is essential to ensure that the benefits promised to the community are fully realized and sustained over time.
For this project to be successful and maintain community trust, it must deliver on its commitment to meaningful and lasting economic benefits for Ignace.
