Dear committee,
I am writing to voice my concern over the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s (NWMO) proposed Deep Geological Repository for high-level radioactive waste
I would like my voice added to calling for a full impact assessment and public hearing and insisting that transportation of the radioactive wastes be included in this assessment. The subject of the Assessment is the Nuclear waste and therefore, the transportation of this material by definition needs to be included in the assessment. It will have impact. HEaven forbid there shouldbe an accident on the way to the site.
I would like to add my voice to the Indigenous groups and allies that calling on the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada to require a federal impact assessment for a nuclear waste project that:
- commits to the inclusion of nuclear waste transportation routes and risks within the project scope
- protects Indigenous rights, including free, prior and informed consent obligations, internationally recognized in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and required under Canadian law
- upholds environmental justice, including the rights of impacted communities along the proposed route to be informed and have a say
Sincerely,
Ken Keesmaat
