Projet de dépôt souterrain en couches géologiques profondes du combustible nucléaire irradié du Canada
Transportation is of grave concern

We are deeply concerned about the risks involved with the transport of nuclear waste across a very large portion of Canada, especially as it would be on the TransCanada Highway for at least part of this. This highway is a crucial link connecting every province to each other, particularly now when the US is a threat to our nationhood. Any interruption of service due to a catastrophic accident that nuclear waste can cause concerns us deeply - the toxic waste in watersheds and communities, displacement of people from their homes, the impact of interruptions in economic activity... History shows us in the abandonment of Chernobyl for decades, the lengthy recovery in Japan after a tsunami for example. In Northern Ontario, it would only take one moose in the wrong place at the wrong time to create a crash, a not uncommon occurence. Then what?
We are also very much aware of the results of scaling up wind and solar power with huge, rapid reductions in costs and time needed to install and start these renewables. Nuclear energy is extremely slow, expensive and hazardous in comparison, thus making it a poor choice for energy when we need to move quickly to eliminate carbon emissions.
Finally, this has a potential local impact for us Manitobans too as the disposal site is part of the watershed for Lake Winnipeg, a Lake that is already struggling with recovery needs. Toxic nuclear waste leaching into our beloved lake will destroy the enjoyment, use and economy of this lake area.
For a proper assessment, the requirement to include the public examination of TRANSPORTATION of nuclear waste must be mandatory.
