Enhancing Women's Leadership and Involvement in Cuba's Renewable Energy Sector

Empowering Women's Leadership and Participation in the Renewable Energy Sector in Cuba (FORMER-Cuba) is a 4.5-year project funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Cowater International in partnership with Union Eléctrica (UNE), the official Cuban counterpart.
This project supports vulnerable communities in Holguin, particularly women, by improving their access to renewable energy (RE) technology and enhancing women's involvement in the RE sector. Project activities include: (1) the installation of RE equipment, expected to benefit women-headed households, local and regional health facilities, local child centres and local workers in surrounding agricultural industries; (2) developing RE gender-responsive academic curricula and learning material and enhancing the RE training capacity of women professors in three higher education institutions; (3) implementing strategies that encourage women's participation and engagement as decision-makers in the RE sector—this includes strategies to increase women's enrollment RE studies; and (4) working with Cuba's Ministry of Mines and Energy to develop a gender equality strategy for the RE sector.
As part of its activities, the project plans to:
- Install 87 solar heaters for domestic hot water in 11 sites in the municipalities of Moa and Holguin (day care centers, nursing home, polyclinics, maternity home, pediatric hospital) and proceed with upgrades to the pumping system at the Moa Hospital.
- Build a demonstration solar park at the University of Moa, which will be comprised of 544 photovoltaic panels that will be placed on the roof of existing buildings on the University campus. It will have an energy generation capacity of 310.43 MWh / year and it has an expected lifespan of 25 years.
- Rehabilitate a small hydroelectric plant located in the town of Melba, within the "Alejandro Humboldt" National Park. The plant is already built but it needs repairs. It is estimated that about 800 meters of the conduction line will have to be repaired, and the engine room requires rehabilitation in its entirety, demanding change of roof, windows and doors, and construction of hydro-sanitary facilities. The rehabilitation of the dam will allow to provide a more reliable and clean source of energy to the inhabitants of the community of la Melba, who currently rely on two diesel generators that work only a few hours a day and on firewood for cooking purposes.
