La Romaine commercial wharf - Rehabilitation of the western riprap

The La Romaine commercial wharf, owned by Transport Canada, is located on the Lower North Shore, 250 km east of Havre-St-Pierre.  La Romaine's marine infrastructure consists of two major sections: the approach protected on each side by riprap, and the steel sheet pile wharf with 2 berths.

The end of the riprap on the west side of the approach is particularly exposed to high waves during storms, which has led to its degradation and that of the retaining wall behind it.  There has been a lot of degradation in the last 3 years.  It seems that the past episodes of high waves action at the observed sites are at the origin of the lack of stones.  Indeed, the small stones were swept away by the waves when bad weather conditions occur followed by strong waves crossing the top of the infrastructure.

The aim of the project consists of repairing the concrete retaining wall and the granular material used as its foundation and installing appropriate protective stones against the retaining wall and on the portion of the existing riprap.

Specifically, the work will include, but is not limited to:

  1. Removing existing stones near the retaining wall to clear the workspace and create on-site stone storage.
  2. Installing granular materials to redo the foundation under the retaining wall.
  3. Restore the concrete wall with grout on some areas as opposed to other damaged sections that will have to be fully demolished, formwork will need to be put in place and concrete will be poured.  Whereas there is no concrete manufacturing plant, it will have to be done on-site with a portable concrete mixer brought on-site and all the required materials (bagged cement powder, aggregates, water, petroleum products to feed the concrete mixer, etc.),
  4. Layering stone on existing riprap.
  5. Since there is no quarry at La Romaine, all required stones for the project will come from a duly accredited quarry located outside of La Romaine. Therefore, will be stored on-site or on nearby land.
