Mount Revelstoke Telemetry Tower

Parks Canada is responsible for forecasting and mitigating the hazard for seven avalanche paths adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway in Mount Revelstoke National Park (MRNP). In January 2022 Avalanche Path 23.8 ran naturally and put a large deposit onto the Trans-Canada Highway. Installing a telemetry tower (weather station) in the vicinity of the Mount Revelstoke avalanche paths has been identified as part of a strategy to expand the avalanche forecasting program into this previously underserved area. The tower will:

1. Improve the availability of representative weather and snowpack information for creating accurate daily avalanche forecasts for the avalanche paths in Mount Revelstoke National Park.

2. Provide raw data for identifying seasonal weather and snowpack patterns that contribute to avalanche activity in a geographic area that is remote from Avalanche Control Service's core operating area in Glacier National Park.

3. Provide a secure source of weather data is that is controlled and maintained through MRG's in house weather telemetry program.

The weather station will be prefabricated and brought to the proposed site via helicopter. A 2.5 x 2.5m (6.25 m2) foundation is required. Ground will be leveled by hand and concrete or rock anchors used to create the foundation. A helicopter will be used to lift the tower into place and pour concrete. The tower is 6m tall. Tree clearing will be required for a helipad (100 m2) and for firesmarting around the tower (approx. 350m2). Proposed staging area is outside the park, adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway and Mount Revelstoke west boundary.

In addition to this construction scope, the existing weather station located in the Rogers Pass Operations Compound will be refurbished. Existing paint and rust will be removed and then the structure will be repainted. Containment will be employed around the tower to capture debris
