• The North Fork Preservation Association (NFPA) appreciates the opportunity to comment on the proposed Fording River Extension (FRX) of the Fording River coal mine by Elk Valley Resources (EVR), situated in the Elk River watershed of British Columbia. Geographically, the Elk River Valley is next door to the Canadian Flathead River Valley which becomes the North Fork of the Flathead River Valley once it crosses the international boundary and enters the State of Montana.   NFPA is a conservation organization which focuses on the North Fork of the Flathead River Valley. The mission of the NFPA is to champion the exceptional biodiversity and wildness of the North Fork of the Flathead River watershed in Northwest Montana. The North Fork of the Flathead River Valley is bordered on the east by Glacier National Park (GNP) and on the west by federal and state public land; only 4 percent of the valley is privately held. • Greetings; Three pillars of any development need to be a balance of social, economic, and ecological benefits. I have no idea how this new development is going to play out , however my recommendation is for EVR to purchase properties along the Elk River and significant fish spawning creeks, between Fording River and Elko to the equivalent of 33.3% of their total held property/mining rights in the Elk Valley. The purpose of these new property purchases would be to enhance and protect the natural heritage of the Elk River watershed for all residents and visitors to appreciate and recreate in perpetuity. These properties should be purchased with the Elk Valley's First Nations input and management. A board of directors from these First Nations as well as all the valley's Outdoor sports alliances and Wildsight would ensure the successs of this venture. The owner of these mines, Glencore, is a Swiss multinational commodities trader known for shady business practices and the mines are notorious for pollution. • Dear Sirs, I am very concerned about additional pollution flowing into Montana rivers, pollution than originates anywhere including locally and in British Columbia.  We know this is happening in our Elk River, with Selenium levels coming in from BC impacting our water quality.  It is lowering fish health and numbers, and threatening a large recreation industry as well.
