Webequie Supply Road Project

Key considerations:

No purpose, language (leaves it open), transparency (seems different communities know different things), what information that is being communicated, nations did not have much to say about the project, vague on who is allowed to use the road, need an extension for more information to be available, sacred sites.

To whom it may concern:

Upon reading the documents for the Webequie Supply Road Project we have these specific concerns:

  • Indigenous people are not being communicated with in a format that is familiar to their traditional indigenous understanding.
  • People have not commented due to the lack of full disclosure of information about the project.
  • The lack of involvement of Indigenous people throughout the life of the project and the next 7 generations for time immemorial
  • Road access by indigenous peoples
  • The lack of identifying and protecting sacred sites (sensitive sites) in the subject area
  • Risks/Benefits not disclosed
  • The purpose of this project is lacking specificity.
  • Description of project lacks information on Ownership/Jurisdiction aspects of road operation

Recommendation:

  • All Indigenous Communities consulted should have an Indigenous Liaison to provide accurate, understandable information about the project.
  • There should be a committee formed consisting of these Indigenous Liaisons from each community consulted to ensure complete transparency throughout the life of the project and for the next 7 generations.
  • Identify cultural practises and land use adjacent to the Webique road to ensure the continued survival of these traditions for the next 7 generations
  • Identify Risks/Benefits of the project to all ages and sexes of Indigenous people during every  phase of the project.
  • Confirm no  limitations or conditions of road access to Indigenous people or their businesses
  • Clarify all specifics of the project and those involved
  • An extension is required in order for ALL Indigenous people to be able to voice their concerns, receive the proper information and get clarification on the project.
