Quantifying Loss from 2011 Flood

How does one measure loss due to a flood that should not have happened ? How can one respond to it happening again if inadequate environmental assessment responses prevent the approval of the proposed channel project ??

My connection to life on Lake Manitoba began 7 decades ago when an aunt and uncle bought a hotel in St. Laurent, which was followed by my parents buying property there 6 decades ago which resulted in my daughter marrying into a local family and my buying property from her in-laws 3 decades ago where my grandchildren and great-grand-daughter now spend time with me !

The flood was devastating for my family...my Dad returned in 2012 to see his property and as he stood there had a stroke and has passed and my Mother moved to another province. My home became unliveable and is still a work in progress. While buildings can be replaced people cannot ! So many friends and families suffered the loss of people who literally could not live with the devastation.

The loss of vegetation, animals and birdsong was shocking-the silence deafening and the destruction of beautiful landscapes were unbearable. I met so many men who wept as they told me about the loss of trees and the gardens they had created and loved !

Now that we are slowly regaining a glimpse of what we had before 2011 we are threatened by an inadequate environmental assessment ??? I know that there are many like me that do not have many decades ahead to enjoy the lake, but to live those in fear of flooding, after the promises made to us.

My husband, who has an even longer ancestral connection to this place, has gone along with my not wanting to leave and believing we would not be without flood protection, is praying we will not be displaced again. He has steadfastly replaced furnaces, and has completed project after project in and out of doors-including a rock wall on our shoreline.

So please find a way to adequately complete the envirnmental assessment process for the channels OR find another way to do the needed flood mitigation.
