The Canadian Chamber of Commerce supports the Contrecœur Port Terminal Expansion Project. Now is the time for bold action to ensure we stop holding up nation-building projects that will expand our trade capacity and strengthen our economic resilience.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is Canada’s largest and most activated business network — representing over 400 chambers of commerce and boards of trade and more than 200,000 business of all sizes, from all sectors of the economy and from every part of the country — working to create the conditions for our collective success. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is the undisputed champion and catalyst for the future of business success. From working with government on economy-friendly policy to providing services that inform commerce and enable trade, we give each of our members more of what they need to succeed: insight into markets, competitors and trends, influence over the decisions and policies that drive business success, and impact on business and economic performance.

As Canada’s second-largest port, the Port of Montreal is a vital economic engine and a strategic gateway connecting Eastern Canada to key international markets in Europe and Asia. Its location and intermodal logistics capabilities make it indispensable to the flow of goods and services across Quebec, Ontario, and the broader Canadian economy. The Port is not just a regional asset; it is a national linchpin in Canada’s global trade architecture.

However, the Port is nearing its operational limits. A shift of just 6% of current U.S.-bound exports to other markets would push the Port to full capacity. Without timely infrastructure expansion, Canada risks constraining its export potential, undermining economic growth, and losing ground in an increasingly competitive global trade environment.

The Contrecœur terminal expansion is a critical response to this challenge. It will unlock new capacity, create over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, and strengthen the competitiveness of the St. Lawrence trade corridor. This investment is essential to ensuring Canadian exporters can scale, diversify, and thrive, supporting economic resilience and prosperity across the country.
