  • I feel that the economic benefits of this project are founded upon an impossible value for oil. Those benefits are in risk. before the project even starts.  If the project proceeds, the considerable damage to the environment, fresh water and groundwater, and endangered animals will definitely occur, whether or not the project is profitable, whether or not any of the economic benefits are realized. Without economic viability, promises of recovery and reclamation of the lands after the project will never materialize, leaving governments on the hook for those costs, and impacts.  Moreover, this project will blow away any hope of Canada attaining emissions targets, or of keeping climate change in check. As I understand that, that's before you consider emissions from refining and using the tarsands oil that project sponsors hope to export.   • Given that all of us (people around the world that is) are still consuming products made from oil and will continue to do so for some time, which new projects, worldwide, should we (Canadians) support as a better alternative to the Teck Frontier project, and what are the comparison details?  It seems to me that there are challenges and environmental impacts with all oil projects.  If the Teck Frontier project is the worst of the lot, then insist that they improve it.  If it is as good or better than other projects around the world, then it should proceed, thus diminishing the likelihood of the projects that are worse proceeding. Simply clamouring to block it, while worse projects proceed elsewhere, doesn't make any sense.

  • but there’s plenty of oil sands in the area already.  Migratory birds and year round wildlife are already too much affected by all the development.  And the market really is not asking for more oil sands.  I fear all the oil sands will suffer the same fate as the orphan wells and leave taxpayong Albertans of the future holding the bill.

  • My concerns on the proposed Fronteir Mine are as follows: However laudable or cutting edge Teck's proposed reclamation plan may be, it is not guaranteed to work. Seedlings will not consume carbon at the same rate as adult trees and like young everywhere they are more vulnerable to disease, heat, cold, heavy rain, hail and fire. Soil microbes do not always recover from disturbance or pH changes. Mature forest is full of balanced equilibriums involving mammals, birds, vascular plants, mosses and lichens, bacteria, fungi, insects, water, and soil. These take many generations to establish and given the climate is already changing, it may not be possible to do so. Teck's data as posted on their webpage Biodiversity and Reclamation shows an annual and overall trend of more land being disturbed or re-disturbed than reclaimed between 2015 and 2018, suggesting even their proactive methods are not very effective.   • I oppose the mine due to the destruction of our precious forrests, the long term impacts on water, wildlife, climate change.  The local air quality, water supplies and safety of the people will be severly affected.   • As an Albertan, I acknowledge the prosperity the oilsands have brought to Alberta and to Canada. I also acknowledge that Albertan families are suffering due to job losses in the oil field. However, the jobs created by the Teck mine will come at the cost of the environment and will contribute to climate change. Climate change is a significant threat to human health - in fact, the World Health Organization states "climate change is the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century". The approval of the Teck mine runs contrary to the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement that Canada signed onto.   • I am strongly opposed to approval of this mine. At a time when we have only 10 years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% to have a 50% chance of staying under 1.5 C of warming, opening such a collosal greenhouse-gas emitting enterprise is both folly and directly contrary to the government's pldege to be carbon-neutral by 2050. Not only is the PRODUCTION of fossil fuels already the biggest generator of greenhouse gases in this country (at 27%), Canada produces some 3% of all the world's fossil fuels (with less than 1% of the world's population). Approving the Teck mine would be both immoral and irresponsible.

The surrounding area to the proposed 290 sq-km mining site is precious land and is filled with valuable plant and animal life. More specifically, the Wood Buffalo National Park and the Peace-Athabasca Delta would suffer undeniably from the ripple effects of the mine. The Peace-Athabasca Delta is one of the largest freshwater inland deltas. The mine, if approved, would be the closest oil sands development project to the park, risking irreversable damage on the quality of that water resource- along with the habitat that relies on that water. Despite being Canada’s largest National Park, it is losing some of the many attributes that have made it ecologically and culturally valuable. Degradation of the Park has been linked to industrial activities upstream on the Athabasca River, and the proposed mine would contribute to the cumulative negative impacts on the Peace-Athabasca Delta, one of the largest freshwater inland deltas. The mine, if approved, would be the closest oil sands development project to the Park, and risks causing irreversible damage on the outstanding universal values of Wood Buffalo from spills, leaks, water withdrawals, malfunctions and tailings management failures.

  • The Frontier Oil Sands Mine would have an unacceptable impact on migratory birds, endangered whooping cranes, and wood bison in the area. UNESCO has already expressed concerns about the derioration of Wood Buffalo National Park, and this government has expressed a committment to greater action to protect it. Having this mine so close to the park would undermine this goal. This facility would also have significant greenhouse gas emissions, and if the world really does make significant progress on greenhouse gas emissions in the next decade and reach net-zero emissions by 2050, this mine could become a stranded asset. If Teck is still a strong, financially stable company then, they could pay to reclaim it, but if they (or a future owner) go through bankruptcy, the government could end up on the hook for clean-up. The environmental impacts of this project are not justified and it should not be approved.

Proposing the biggest oil sands mine yet is complete nonsense in a climate crisis as it will make it impossible to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.   • Dear government officials, We are in a climate and ecological crisis. Scientists have been desperatly sounding the alarm because we have lost 60% of wildlife in the past 50 years and have entered the sixth mass extinction in the world's history. Greenhouse gas and marine pollution are on the rise and Canada's policies have not done enough to address this problem. Projects like this one contribute to the problem and even worse, they accelerate climate change and the destruction of ecosystems that are key to our survival and the survival of wildlife.  For all these reasons, and I am making this short, I am strongly opposed to this project. If the Canadian government keeps going into this direction instead of taking climate actions now then it will be complicite for actively participating in human and animal suffering and ultimately our extinction.
