Kami Iron Ore Project – Public Comments Invited and Federal Funding Available
The Proposed Project
Alderon Iron Ore Corp.(the proponent) is proposing the Kami Iron Ore Project (the Project) that consists of constructing and operating an open-pit iron ore mine about 10 kilometres west of Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador. The mine would produce up to 16 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate annually and would include waste rock disposal areas, a tailings management facility, processing and support infrastructure, and a 12-kilometre rail connection to the existing Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway. There would also be storage and load-out facilities in Sept-Iles, Quebec.
Federal-Provincial Environmental Assessment
On October 14, 2011, the proponent registered the Project for environmental assessment in accordance with the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Protection Act. On December 5, 2011, the Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Environment and Conservation determined that the proponent must submit an environmental impact statement (EIS).
On January 13, 2012, a federal comprehensive study, under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, commenced for the Project.
The proposed Project is undergoing a cooperative environmental assessment process.
