Ajax Copper-Gold Mine Project – Availability of $50,000 to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is making available $50,000 under its Participant Funding Program to assist individuals and groups to participate in the federal environmental assessment of the Ajax Copper-Gold Mine Project (the Project) in British Columbia (BC).

KGHM Ajax Mining Inc. is proposing to develop the Ajax Mine Project, a copper-gold mine located immediately south of Kamloops, BC. The project has an expected lifespan of 23 years with a production capacity of up to 60,000 tonnes of mineral ore per day.

To receive funding, successful applicants must participate in the federal environmental assessment of the Project. This funding is intended to support public participation in upcoming steps in the comprehensive study process.

A funding review committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, will assess all applications and make a recommendation on the allocation of funds. Applications received by the Agency by July 16, 2011 will be considered.

Information on the Participant Funding Program, including the Participant Funding Program Guide and the application form, is available on the Agency’s Web site. Information on the proposed Project and the environmental assessment is also available on the Agency’s Web site in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 11-03-62225.
